Lorne Street Student Accomodation

Location: Lorne Street, Auckland, New Zealand
Builder: ICON
Architect: Ashton Mitchell and DPA Architects

Scope of Work

PCR was engaged to deliver specialist heritage façade remediation and internal structural concrete restoration for the Lorne Street Student Accommodation project. The works involved careful restoration of historic brick and concrete elements, with a strong focus on durability, aesthetic consistency, and long-term corrosion protection. The brief required a combination of heritage-sensitive repair methods and modern remediation systems to extend the life of the structure while maintaining the architectural intent of the development.

Our Solution

Heritage Brick Remediation – Restoration of the existing brick façade, including selective brick replacement, repointing, localised repairs, and colour matching to blend new work with the original heritage fabric.

Concrete Repairs – Localised concrete remediation to deteriorated structural elements, including removal of unsound material, reinstatement, and finishing to suit surrounding surfaces.

Corrosion Control – Treatment of corroded reinforcement and installation of long-term corrosion mitigation systems to help protect the structure from ongoing deterioration.

Cathodic Protection – Installation of a cathodic protection system to provide ongoing corrosion management in critical reinforced concrete areas.

Seismic Strengthening System – Installation of a strengthening mesh system to support structural upgrading requirements within the building.

Clear Protective Coating – Application of a clear protective coating to selected façade areas to improve durability and help protect repaired surfaces while maintaining the natural character of the substrate.

Internal Concrete Restoration – Specialist internal repair works to restore concrete elements, address corrosion-related damage, and improve overall presentation and performance.

Outcome

PCR successfully delivered a complex package of heritage remediation and structural restoration works at Lorne Street, supporting both the preservation of the building’s historic character and the performance requirements of the new development. By combining specialist repair techniques, corrosion protection, cathodic protection, and sensitive colour and material matching, the project achieved a durable and visually cohesive result in line with ICON’s construction standards and the architects’ design intent.
